What To Discover
It is pretty hard to come up with a topic for this next essay. A few things that im curious about that might be a good topic idea would include things such as these; What is better, a Dodge, a Ford, or a Chevy truck? What is it about cars that makes people love them so much (such as car collectors)? What is it that people love so much about Texas? I think that these are questions that some poeple think they know the answer to, but a lot of people will have different opinions. I would like to see what people think and see the main reasons for these things.

I think there's potential in all three of these topics (I especially like the idea of investigating why Texans--as a general rule--are so proud of their state. Being from Iowa, where people generally aren't as... enthusiastic?...about their state, I'm curious about this as well.) Whatever topic you choose, remember that you want to make it personal. If you end up investigating the Texas question, you might bring in your experiences growing up in the Texas schools system--what do you remember learning about your state (it's history, culture, etc) in school? How did this influence your view of Texas? What did you learn from your parents? How do you think your experience differed from students in another state (for example, my friend Amy teaches fourth grade here in Texas--she's from Minnesota originally--and she could not get over how much time is dedicated to studying Texas history in the fourth grade curriculum. The first line in the textbook her school uses is, "Texans have a lot to be proud of..."--we had a good laugh over this unabashed declaration of Texas superiority :)She was also really surprised that the school said a pledge to the Texas flag each morning...we'd never done such a thing in the Midwest.)These are just ideas to get you thinking about how you might narrow your focus and direct your research. Good luck!
